the Annual Common Application, Personal Essay Writing, and PSAT Workshops

to be held

August 1 – 4, 2017 and August 7 – 11, 2017

at the Within Reach office

10:00AM-12:00PM daily

Given the success of last year’s summer workshops in preparation for the college application season, we are offering them again this year. The first workshop, Crushing the Common App—Boot Camp Style, will walk students through the Common Application, which goes live on August 1, 2017. During each two-hour session, your student will:

  1. Fill in all fields of the Common App.
  1. Complete the resume portion of the application.
  1. Select all colleges to which he or she will apply, and review all supplemental materials that will be due before each deadline.
  1. Calculate the number of expected hours he or she should expect to work on college applications based on his or her college list.
  1. Create a timeline based on the application submission deadlines.
  1. Formulate an outline for the Personal Essay if he or she has not yet begun to write one.

NOTE: Students may attend as many sessions as they would like!

We also invite interested parties to attend Finding Your Voice: On Personal Essay Writing, a writing workshop that will take place on Friday, August 4th, and Friday, August 11th. Your child may make A’s in all of his or her English classes, but the Personal Essay will be one of the most distinctive and meticulously crafted pieces of writing he or she will write to date. This is no easy task, as it requires one to convey a unique, personal story with a subtext demonstrative of the qualities of a student prepared for college, and it will be very different from the typical high school writing assignment. Our two-hour Personal Essay workshops will highlight the following:

  1. It is easy to write about what one knows, but it is difficult to write about oneself. We will discuss ways to think about how to captivate an audience through the use of story.
  1. How does one show, not tell in the Personal Essay?
  1. How to allude to the universal from the specific.
  1. What is subtext, and how do we achieve this in our writing?
  1. The Personal Essay audience.
  1. The Personal Essay format.
  1. The difference between editing and revisions.
  1. The myth of writing the perfect work under pressure at the last minute.
  1. How to work with your writing strengths, even if you’re not creative.
  1. A look at the Personal Essay prompts in the Common App.

Finally, our PSAT workshop, designed for rising juniors and aptly named “Eyes on the National Merit Prize”, will afford students the opportunity to learn evidence-based Reading & Writing and Math strategies, repeatedly applying new test-taking tools under authentic testing conditions throughout our condensed curriculum.

If you are interested in registering your student for any of these workshops, don’t delay! We are capping these seminars at eight students each in order to facilitate as much personalized time as necessary. Please note: we will offer anyone who refers a friend $25.00 off the cost of the workshop–and there is no limit to the number of referral credits one may accumulate!
